What is the judicial branch? What does it comprise of? What do they implement within our society?
The courts of India are very similar to the British legal system. Each type of court has a different amount of power over what happens. The court with the highest power is the Supreme Court, which is only consulted if the other courts can’t solve the problem or if the issue is huge. The second most powerful court is the High Court, and the lowest court is the Lok Adalat, which is for villagers. The Supreme Court makes the decision based on the evidence. There are 21 High Courts in India. Company law cases go straight to the high court. The Lok Adalat Court is based on the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. If you are a villager, you go to the Lok Adalat Court, and if you don’t live in the village, you take your case to the state court. There is a state court in every state in India and if you lose in the state court, you can ask to go to a high court. If you lose in the high court, you can ask to go to the supreme court.

Do you like watching cricket?
One of the Supreme Court’s duties is to accept or reject public investigations. The IPL (also known as the Indian Premier League) is a organization that holds cricket tournaments every year. Currently some people who are a part of the audience are participating in illegal activities that involves them paying cricket players to produce a certain result during a certain part of the match. These people then go to the betting markets so that they can win the money on the bet they placed for that cricket player. Currently the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is carrying out an investigation although a person living in Lucknow filed a for an investigation (for public interest) to be carried by a Special Investigation Team for spot fixing. He also requested that all of the matches be postponed until this team comes back with results. The Supreme Court has rejected this and has explained that this will not take place until the BCCI’s investigation is complete. They have given the BCCI a deadline but we’ll have to see what happens next!
Another duty of the Supreme Court is to handle cases that have to do with extreme violation of the constitution. Ankeet Chavan was one of the three Rajasthan Royals (IPL Cricket team) players who was arrested for alleged spot fixing. His lawyer has appealed for Chavan's bail because Chavan was to be wed on June 2, and his wedding might now be delayed. His lawyer stated that it was fixed that Chavan was to get married on June 2, so he should be granted bail so that he can get married. Chavan can now either choose to delay his wedding or get married in jail. The other two Rajasthan Royals players that were arrested, Sreesanth and Chandila have been fighting over whose fault it is that they are in the position that they are.
